January History Highlights 1914 First marriage at Grace Lutheran - Albert Roelfs and Alvina Schmert 1914 First Communion service held for Grace (Communion set borrowed from First Methodist Church) 1939 Church services of Grace at Illinois and Dechman were broadcast over WMBD 1966 Fund drive to remodel the chancel of Grace on Arcadia 1967 Installation of Pastor Roy Moore at Grace on Arcadia 1970 Dedication of new chancel at Grace Church on Arcadia 1984 Peace congregation voted to become a member of the Lutheran Home of Greater Peoria Association 1988 Official merger of American Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church in America and named Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America began 1989 Pastor Freidinger of Peace Lutheran received a call to become Pastor/Developer of a congregation in Benton, IL 1990 Mission 90 - Lutheran Worship Festival at Civic Center 1991 Peace Epiphany Party, hosted by Boyer's - Fellowship and Christmas tree bonfire 1992 Worship service at the Peoria Civic Center for the Northern Conference of the Central/Southern Illinois Synod 1993 Theresa and Steve Montgomery wedding - Last one at Grace on Arcadia 1993 Special Peace Congregational meeting to act upon resolutions from Council concerning disposition of Peace's real estate assets should merger occur (Jan. 16) 1994 Grace Church on Arcadia was sold to Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist. Keys handed over 1994 Worship begins for Grace at Seventh Day Adventist Church in Peoria 1994 Unanimous vote for Grace Lutheran and Peace Lutheran to merge (Jan. 23) 1994 Letter from Pastors Bengtson and Wake to announce the unanimous vote of both churches to merge (Jan. 24) 1994 Grace Church and Peace Church worship together at Seventh Day Adventist Church (Jan. 30) January is a new year and brings new beginnings. Along with the beginning of the Lutheran Church in America, January also brought many "beginnings" in the life of Grace and Peace Lutheran Church. For Grace Lutheran, January brought a first communion service, a new Pastor, a dedication of a new chancel, and a new location for worship at Seventh Day Adventist. For Peace Lutheran, January also meant beginning to prepare for a new Pastor. January 1994 marked the beginning of Grace and Peace Lutheran Church. On January 18 we will celebrate the vote to merge. We will have a special anniversary service and dedicate the new anniversary banner. Unfortunately, Ron Havekost, President of Grace at the time of the merger will not be able to be with us. A letter of regret can be found elsewhere in the Cornerstone. Richard Joyce, President of Peace at the time of the merger, will participate in the service. A special coffee hour will follow. |
